Ethel Annie Morgan (1893-1982)

Personal details

Gender:
Female
Notes:
Religious name —
  1. Sister Judith Anne Morgan CSMV
Ethel never married. She was a school teacher at Clyde Girls School, Mount Macedon from 1931 before becoming a nun, joining the Community of St Mary the Virgin at St Mary's School, Wantage, Oxfordshire, England in 1939, and spent many years teaching for the order in India, dying in England of cancer. Later in life she kept up a correspondence with my father, Peter. She surely kept up correspondence with all her family in Australia and her personal archive would have been incredible. I checked with the order and alas, all was destroyed upon Ethel's death. She worked and lived in the following Community Houses:
  • 1939 St Mary's School, Wantage, Oxfordshire
  • 1941 St Helena's Retreat House, Ealing, London
  • 1941 St Faith's Home, Lostwithiel, Cornwall
  • 1945 St Mary's Convent, Poona, India
  • 1951 on furlough, Wantage, May-November
  • 1951 St Mary's Training College, Poona, India
  • 1954 St Mary's Convent, Poona, India
  • 1957 on furlough, Melbourne, sailed 29 November
  • 1958 sailed for India from Melbourne, 1 June
  • 1962 St Mary's School, Wantage, Oxfordshire, from April
  • 1962 St Mary's Convent, Poona, India, from October
  • 1969 installed as Mother Provincial's Assistant
  • 1971 returned to St Mary's School, Wantage, Oxfordshire, 26 April
  • 1971 St Mary's Home, Buxted (mentally handicapped adults)
  • 1978 St Helena's Retreat House, Ealing, London
  • 1979 St Katherine's House, Wantage, Oxfordshire (home for elderly ladies)
I remember Sister Judith Anne very well. She was a fun loving person, she was excellent at table tennis, which she enjoyed playing after lunch. This would be in the 1970s. She was in remission from cancer before she died.
