Aberdeen Hill was in Castlemaine at Forest Creek (the hill near Circular Road and Bruce Street, colloquially known as such, after firebrand William Aberdeen). Local newspaper the Mount Alexander Mail had described Aberdeen Hill a few years before as a place of vice and prostitution, its ‘more respectable portion’ of inhabitants notwithstanding. It sounds like a place where lodging was cheaply come by.
Fanny Stains was born 5 September 1867 at Maldon to William Stains, 38, butcher, London, England and Elizabeth Stains, 42, formerly Morgan, formerly Blewett, Penzance, Cornwall, England married 28 November 1865, St Marks Church, Collingwood. Registered 15 October 1867, Castlemaine, by Elizabeth Stains, Aberdeen Hill. Nurse by whom certified: Mrs Ross.
