In the space of three days all five entries on Edward's page in the birth register - babies and children between one day and eight years old - had died of broncho pneumonia, whooping cough, scarlatina, want of vitality, exhaustion, diarrhea, epilepsy and pneumonia.

D. Whitcombe was Dr William Philip Whitcombe, then resident surgeon at the Ballarat Hospital. Robert Rattray was the sexton of the Ballarat cemetery.
