23 September 1857 - Gabriel Blewett and John Morgan both joined the Friendly Society of United Operative Stonemasons of Victoria (trade union) on this date. No record of a second Gabriel Blewett or John Blewett. Membership lists are only available for 1856-61 and although both names appear in all 6 books, they appear to be duplications, not proof that either was a member from 1857 to 1861. Given that members withdrew their cards (membership) on becoming employers, this probably indicates that the Gabriel Blewett who was a member was Gabriel junior, as Gabriel senior was likely his employer (Blewett and Co.).
30 June 1858 - John Morgan’s name transferred from Contributions book to Arrears book re. his membership of the Friendly Society of United Operative Stonemasons of Victoria (trade union). Gabriel’s name continued on in the Contributions book for longer, and he twice brought his arrears up to date; however, his line eventually became blank. No evidence of him withdrawing his card. Common reasons masons withdrew their cards in 1858 included: moving to work on Wilson’s Prom light house and Cape Schank light house, withdrawn from the trade, became employer, to Port Curtis diggings, gone to the diggings (also diggins - love that), and these that I like: gone to the Bush, up the country; and a few to the railway.
